WICKLIFFE, Ohio -- Wickliffe Middle School is for students in the fifth through eighth grade.
The school motto is "respect and responsibility lead to one's personal best."
The 'Blue Devils' pride is showing after being named this week's Fox 8 Cool School.
“We just have a great group of kids. Who try to get better every day. Who respect the people around them. Who take responsibility in their learning,” teacher Nicholas Gallo said.
Built in the 1920's, it's an old school that uses the newest teaching methods.
There are smart boards in all the classrooms. And, students should keep their cell phones out.
They’re needed to complete the day's lessons. It's a new interactive way students post their assignments in class and at home. It's called Ed Modo. “And you can get on your phone and there's this app where you can use safari.
Mr. Gallo posts assignments on there and we have to reply to them,” eighth grader Hannah Balog said. Students find it easier to use, especially if they don’t have a computer at home.
At Wickliffe Middle School, they are working away from teacher led lessons, to students working in cooperative groups. And, the teachers work in groups, too, using the teaming concept. They form their own grade level teams and meet daily to see how they can improve on how students learn.
"We're able to plan collaborative units, using reading across the curriculum in math, social studies and science. It allows us also to work more individually with the kids, teacher Julie Hunter said."
While achieving in academics is of ultimate importance at Wickliffe Middle School, students have their own reason why it's such a ‘cool school’.
"Wickliffe, it’s a fun school. And, you learn while you're having fun,” fifth grader Daniel Byrne said.
