Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident

AKRON, Ohio — A woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the street.  Police believe she was headed home to her apartment.

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office identified her as Rebecca Altuz, 58, of Akron.

She was crossing Darrow Road in Akron around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday when an SUV hit her and left the scene.

Altuz was taken to Akron City Hospital where she died at 9:45 p.m.

Jimmy Kirkman, Jr., 67, of Akron, was arrested around 2:40 a.m. Thursday after an officer recognized his vehicle.

He was charged with felony hit-skip.  Other charges are pending.

According to the Akron Police Department, alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
