Name of Bystander Shot on Porch Released

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Police Homicide Unit is investigating the death of James Swindler, III, who was shot on his porch on the city’s east side Sunday morning.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office released Swindler’s name on Monday.

According to police, dispatch received a call around 11 a.m. reporting a male had been shot in the 10500 block of Columbia Avenue.

When they arrived, police found Swindler, 20, with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center but died from his injuries.

A preliminary investigation shows two males were exchanging gunfire in the area. Swindler, who was not involved in the incident, was shot as he stood on his porch.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call police.
