Body Found Presumed to be Missing Boy
AKRON — A body found Sunday is presumed to be that of Nic Shaffer, who was swept away by waters in Mud Brook in Akron Thursday night, according to Akron Fire officials.
According to Captain Mark Oziomek, the Akron Fire Department Rescue Team along with the Cuyahoga Falls Fire Department Rescue Team found what they presume to be the remains of Nicholas Shaffer in Mud Brook Sunday at 11:21 a.m.
The 12-year-old with autism was sitting on the wall adjacent to the creek at the Timber Top Apartments in Akron Thursday around 5:45 p.m.
Nic was dangling his feet when he suddenly jumped in. His mother said she jumped in after him and wrapped her legs around him, but the current was just too strong.
Three other people jumped in the water to try to rescue Nicholas. They followed him down the stream until the boy was swept out of sight.
Search crews continued their efforts through late Friday night and all day Saturday.
According to the Akron Fire Department, seven other departments assisted in the search. They compiled over 60 personnel, including expert ropes, responders, and divers.
Due to recent floodwaters, the creek is three times as high as normal and 10 times as fast, making it challenging for safety crews.
