BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The stepmother of a Baton Rouge teen was arrested this weekend after she allegedly brutally attacked the girl during an argument about cleaning chores. She is also accused of physically striking her own daughter after the first altercation.
The incident originally happened on Tuesday, June 25 at a home located on Hillbrook Ave in Baton Rouge. The biological mother of the teen called police after seeing her daughter physically abused.
According to the arrest report, the teen’s stepmother, Ginger Bencaz, 40, began a verbal argument over cleaning duties. The argument quickly escalated to physical violence.
“[Bencaz] became nose to nose with the victim, and became very angry towards her, and continued yelling at the victim,” the report notes. “[Bencaz] started waving her hands around the victim’s head and eventually slapped the victim on the face. [Bencaz] then grabbed the victim by the hair and slammed her face into the ground multiple times. The victim then flipped onto her back and [Bencaz] then struck the victim in the face multiple times with a closed fist. The victim then turned back on to her stomach, trying to get away, when [Bencaz] grabbed her by the hair again and continued slamming her face into the ground.”
The teen managed to lock herself in a nearby bathroom and took pictures with her cell phone of her bloody face. The officer notes that the teen had a cut on the right side of her nose, her nose was swollen and the left corner of her mouth was swollen, too.
“The victim was having trouble opening her left side of her mouth to explain the incident during the interview,” the report notes. “The victim began crying multiple times when explaining the incident…”
The ordeal was partially witnessed by Bencaz’s younger, biological daughter. She was interviewed by police on Friday, June 28. She told the officer that she tried to separate the two during the physical altercation, but was unsuccessful.
“[Bencaz] yelled at [her daughter] and she became frightened and ran into the backyard of the residence,” the report notes. “When [she] returned to the living [room] she saw a puddle of blood on the flood, and blood on [Bencaz’s] white shirt. [She] then asked [her mother], ‘What did you do?'”
The biological daughter claims her mother grabbed her by the head and started shaking it back and forth. She allegedly hit her daughter in the back of her head with an open hand.
Bencaz claims the blood on her shirt happened when the first teen bit her. She says the blood was her own and not the teens.
Bencaz was arrested and charged with two counts of Domestic Abuse Battery, Cruelty to Juvenile’s, and Second-Degree Battery. She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
