MENTOR, OH — The cleanup continues at Mentor Headlands Beach after a massive party closed the beach over the weekend.
Beach-goers were a bit disappointed and a bit disgusted at Headlands Beach State Park in Mentor Tuesday.
“When we pulled up, my son saw all the dumpsters full of trash and I wondered what was going on,” said Michael Hills, of Kent.
“We brought the kids to the beach and a lot of them noticed the trash too. We had to lay around the trash on the beach,” said Nicki Novak, of Kent.
According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the trash was left over from an unauthorized party at the beach Sunday afternoon.
The ODNR said more than 1,000 people were in attendance. The party got so out of hand, they were forced to close the beach 45 minutes early.
Two days later, crews were still cleaning up the large amounts of trash and litter left behind.
“Trash can wash around anywhere. It just screws everything up. People should just take care of what they bring to the beach,” said Joshua Henry, of Cleveland.
While there was no damage to any structures, ODNR said they are looking into the possibility of any charges against the event organizers.
According to ODNR, a special event permit is required for any event that would be considered bigger than a family outing.
