(CNN) — Steven Powell, the father of the Washington state man who killed himself and two children by blowing up their home, will serve less than a year in prison, a Washington state prison official tells CNN.

Powell, who was in prison for voyeurism involving children, is due to be released May 23, the spokesman for the Washington State Department of Corrections said Wednesday.

Chad Lewis said offenders in Washington can reduce their prison sentences by participating in programs and not committing any serious infractions while in prison.

Powell will have to register as a sex offender with local law enforcement.

In February 2012, his son Josh set fire to the family’s home, killing himself and his sons, Charlie and Braden.
