AKRON — Fire crews were on the scene of a large blaze at a metal recycling plant in Akron for nearly 9 hours Wednesday.
Several 911 calls came in around 8:15 a.m. reporting heavy flames and smoke in the area of 325 Silver Street, according to Akron Fire.
When crews arrived, they reported hearing several explosions in the building. The blaze was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm Fire and additional units were called in.
Firefighters say they were on a “defensive attack.” The plant housed explosive materials.
Utility companies were been called to shut off power and gas to the building.
No one was injured.
Officials are unsure how the fire started. Heavy, black smoke initially made it hard for firefighters to determine a cause.
The structure is considered a total loss.
