MECCA, Ohio — Investigators say a body was recovered Sunday from the basement of a home that was destroyed in a fire.

Police were originally called to a barn fire on the same property in the 4800 block of North Park Avenue shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday.

Shortly after that call, they began investigating allegations that a distraught man, upset after hearing his wife wanted a divorce, set the barn on fire.

Smoke and flames were also then seen coming from the home. Trumbull County 911 reports state that sounds of a possible explosion were also heard at the scene.

The fires were under control by Saturday night, but as of 10 p.m., officers had not located the man.

Authorities found the body when they returned to investigate Sunday. They believe it is that of the husband, but an autopsy is still pending.

The fires, which destroyed both the barn and the house, are being investigated by the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office.
