PERRY TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A man was critically injured after two all-terrain vehicles (ATV) collided early Sunday morning in Lake County.

The crash happened just after 3:30 a.m. on Middle Ridge Road in Perry Township.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Zachary Knight, 20, and his passenger, Nicholas Clark, 20, were traveling westbound on an ATV, with Kody Hollingshead following closely behind on another ATV.

At some point during the ride, Knight slowed down, but since he didn’t have tail lights installed, Hollingshead didn’t see them and struck Knight’s rear tire, officials said.

The ATV carrying Hollingshead overturned and he was ejected.

He was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition with “life-threatening” injuries.

Knight nor Clark were injured.

Investigators said alcohol was a factor in the crash. Knight was arrested and charged with OVI and other traffic violations. Clark was charged with underage consumption.

Deputies say none of the riders were wearing helmets.

The accident remains under investigation.
