Jerry Hood, Jr.

AKRON, Ohio – One day after accused Craigslist killer Richard Beasley took the stand in his own defense, prosecutors called a rebuttal witness of their own who contracted much of what Beasley said under oath.

Beasley is accused of luring Ralph Geiger, 56 of Akron, David Pauley, 51 of Norfolk Virginia and Timothy Kern, 47 of Massillon to their death using a help wanted ad placed on Craigslist in 2011.

He testified on Wednesday that the ad was for a farm hand on property in Noble County, Ohio that belonged to a friend named Jerry Hood Sr. who was hospitalized at the time.

Beasley claimed that Hood’s son, Jerry Hood Jr., wanted to hire somebody to take care of the property because the Hood family wasnt sure how much time they would be spending there.

“He (Jerry Hood Jr.) told me that at this point they didnt ever think they would live down there again on a permanent basis and they were going to need somebody to look after the farm,” said Beasley under direct questioning by his own attorneys on Wednesday.

Both defense and prosecutors rested their case on Wednesday, but the jury was returned to court on Thursday to hear from three rebuttal witnesses that included Jerry Hood Jr. who denied asking Beasley to place the ad.

On Wednesday, Beasley’s attorney, James Burdon, asked him: “Did you collaborate with him (Jerry Hood Jr.) on the posting of a Craigslist ad for the farm in Caldwell?” to which he answered “Absolutely.”

On Thursday Jerry Hood Jr. was asked: “At any point in time did you ask (Richard Beasley) to help you find somebody to take care of the farm?” to which he answered “no sir.”

“You never asked Mr. Beasley to place an ad for you on Craigslist?” questioned prosecutor Paul Scarcella.

“No sir,” answered Hood.

Also on Wednesday, Beasley testified that Hood “did most of the computer work and he wanted me to interview people.”

“He (Hood) really handled most of the computer stuff and I did some inverviews and when I got the interview information I got it to him,” testified Beasley.

On Thursday, Hood, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, denied knowing much of anything about a computer.

“I dont even know how to check an email,” said Hood from the witness stand.

“You are not computer literate?” asked Scarcella.

“Very computer illiterate,” answered Hood.

“That’s not something they taught you in the Marine Corps?” continued Scarcella, to which Hood replied “I was combat oriented. I didnt have to know how to work a computer.”

On Wednesday, Beasley also testified that Hood would sleep over at a house where Beasley was staying.

“He would sleep on the couch one two nights a week sometimes,” testified Beasley.

In his testimony on Thursday, however, Hood denied ever staying with Beasley.

Beasley also testified on Wednesday that he would turn all of the information from the Craigslist job interviews over to Hood.

“Who was going to make the decision as to who was or was not going to be hired?” asked Burdon.

“That was all him. I had nothing to do with that,” testified Beasley.

Hood, however, denied ever knowing any of the three murder victims who thought they had the job, two of whom were buried in shallow graves near his property.

“Do you know anybody named Ralph Geiger?” asked Scarcella. “No sir,” answered Hood. “Do you know a Tim Kern?” followed Scarcella. “No sir, i have heard the name” answered Hood. “Do you know David Pauley?” he was asked. Hood shook his head ‘no.’

Hood contradicted other statements made by Beasley on Wednesday, including knowing the lone survivor of the so-called Craigslist killings, Scott Davis.

Beasley testified that Hood put him in charge of Davis hiring, teling him “this (Davis) is the guy we want. Follow up on him.”

“Do you know Scott Davis?” Scarcella asked Hood on Thursday. “no sir,” said Hood. “I’ve heard the name but I can’t say I know him.”

Following Thursday’s rebuttal testimony, Beasley’s jury was sent home and asked to return on Monday for closing arguments.

If he is convicted, Beasley could get the death penalty.
