CANTON, Ohio — Eight dogs died in a house fire Wednesday night in Canton, but their owners were not home at the time, fire officials tell Fox 8 News.

According to Canton Fire Chief Jeff Magee, the blaze broke out just after 10:15 p.m. at a home on Sixth Street SW.

A family allegedly came home to find their house on fire and called for help. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames throughout the home, which prevented them from going inside to retrieve the dogs.

Magee says a partial roof collapse triggered two other walls in the home to come down. A demolition crew will likely tear the rest down sometime on Thursday.

Meanwhile, investigators are looking into what caused the fire.
