Hollywood and Dine
David checked out the new film, “The Call,” starring Abigail Breslin and Halle Berry. Of course, he picked Abigail’s brain for some great recipe ideas!

Upcoming Ohio Festivals
Kristian Campana from the Ohio Festival Blog filled us in on the coolest upcoming events.
- Maple Syrup Festival – March 9th & 10th – The annual Maple Syrup Family Festival is planned for the first two weekends in March from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. daily. Enjoy live historical demonstrations, horse drawn wagon rides to sugar camp, music, food, maple products for sale and more.
- Buzzard Sunday – March 17th – Celebrate the first unofficial sign of spring at Buzzard Sunday! Turkey vulture fans from far and wide gather at Buzzard Roost to cheer on the buzzards return and welcome spring back to Northern Ohio.
- Dyngus Day – April 1st – Dyngus Day, or Wet Monday (Polish Śmigus-Dingus or lany poniedziałek) is the name for Easter Monday. Historically a Polish tradition, Dyngus Day celebrates the end of the observance of Lent and the joy of Easter. Over the decades, Dyngus Day has become a wonderful holiday to celebrate Polish-American culture, heritage and traditions. In Cleveland specifically, our goal is to not only make this a Polish Cultural festival; we also want to celebrate our Polka Heritage as well as the other Eastern European cultures still thriving in Cleveland.
Better Ways to Stock Your Fridge
Did you know there is a better way to organize your fridge? Here to explain was Registered Dietician, Kristin Kirkpatrick, from The Cleveland Clinic. Your waistline will thank you!
1) Display fruit in clear glass bowls, one study found that doing so significantly increased fruit consumption.
2) Cut up fruit and veggies (squeeze lemon juice on apples and pears to keep from turning brown) which makes it easier and more appealing to eat fruit
3) Pre-portion into individual servings to avoid overeating (for example, buy nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate chips – mix together in a large bowl to make trail mix. Then take individual zip lock bags and put 1/4 cup of the trail mix in each bag. Now you’ve got pre-portioned out trail mix that you can just grab and go every day. MUCH cheaper than an individual energy bar and healthier too (fills you up, monounsaturated fats, etc)!
4) Pre-portion chips, pretzels, nuts, etc and store excess out of sight (back of the pantry, not at eye level) to use when you run out of your individual portioned out bags to refill.
5) Purchase foods that you have to work harder for (pistachios in shells instead of shelled, popcorn kernels to cook on the stove instead of microwave, frozen foods that need to be defrosted, etc.).
6) Use food storage containers to your benefit – when your storing leftovers, put them in small, individual size containers to portion out instead of in one huge container.
7) Buy appetizer plates OR a new plate set you love with great salad plates – and use them. Studies show that the smaller the plate, the smaller the portions
