EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — A man who was injured during a home invasion used “diversionary tactics” to allow his family to escape during the ordeal.

According to the East Cleveland Police Department, Jason Smith was slashed with a knife and shot on Tuesday evening.

Officers were called to the 1300 block of Hampton Road around 6:40 p.m.

According to police, four people attempted to rob Smith and a fight broke out.

One of them cut him with a knife and another shot him.

Smith reportedly sells tennis shoes out of his basement.

He was taken to University Hospital then later life flighted to MetroHealth Medical Center.

After undergoing surgery, Smith was listed in critical condition on Wednesday morning.
