Lakewood police say the incident began just before 4:30 a.m. when a woman called to say a man had assaulted her, along with his girlfriend, at a Detroit Avenue home.

The caller said the man took off in a silver Oldsmobile Cutlass.

A short time after the call, an officer spotted the suspect vehicle on Clifton Boulevard, swerving and narrowly striking parked cars.

The officer activated his lights to pull the man over. The driver briefly stopped near Fry Ave., then sped away at a high rate of speed.

Not long after the pursuit began, the suspect lost control of his car and slammed into the porch of a home in the 9400 block of Clifton Blvd.

The 31-year-old driver was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment.

Charges are pending.
