CANTON, Ohio — A female passenger is dead after a driver crashed while trying to flee from troopers, the Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed.

The accident happened just after 12:30 a.m. on Saturday morning in the 1700 block of East Tuscarawas Street in Canton.

According to a news release, a trooper stopped Christopher W. Dinger, 27, for speeding on Cherry Street, north of US 30. Dinger initially stopped, then took off after the trooper got out of his patrol car.

But he didn’t get very far.

Investigators say Dinger lost control of his car, which slid off the left side of the road then struck a curb. His passenger, Stephanie A. Casto, 21, was ejected from the car.

Dinger allegedly ran from the crash scene, before troopers caught up with him a short time later. He was treated for minor injuries, then booked into the Stark County Jail.

Casto was taken to Aultman Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she later died.

Alcohol is suspected in the crash, the news released stated. Dinger is charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana; however, more charges are expected.

The crash remains under investigation.
