VATICAN CITY-- Just hours after Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday that he was going to resign, lightning appeared to strike St. Peter's Basilica.

The dramatic flashes of light sent shock waves around the world, because of the timing of the storm.

The Pope will step down Feb. 28.

The 85-year-old is the first pope to step down in nearly 600 years.
