Murder Arrest After Man’s Body Found in Creek

BARBERTON– Several arrests have been made after a man’s body is found in a creek.

It all started on Jan. 28, when Barberton detectives said they became aware of a homicide that happened at 1800 W. Turkeyfoot Road on our about Jan. 4.

Then, Feb. 8, the Barberton Police Department, assisted by agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, recovered the body of John P. Smith, 36, of North Canton.

Smith’s body was recovered in the Conotton Creek on Somerdale Road in Tuscarawas County.

John Yanik, 52, has been charged with murder.

Police said Stephen Batdorf, 46, Paul Wright, 46, and Trisha Copley, 22, were all charged with tampering with evidence.All four suspects are being held in the Summit County Jail on $250,000 bond each.
