TORONTO — They were once famously known as the “gay penguins.”

Now two nesting penguins at the Toronto Zoo have become fathers.

Although they never actually had a sexual relationship, Buddy and Pedro became inseparable last year.

The animals made headlines when zoo staff decided to separate the two, so they could mate.

It turns out the time apart was good for them.

The females in Pedro and Buddy’s lives have recently hatched chicks!

Pedro’s chick was born two weeks ago, while Buddy’s arrived a few days later.
