Mount Union Will Try to Claim National Football Title #11

SALEM, Virginia– The stage is set.  #1 Mount Union will battle #3 St. Thomas (Minnesota) on Friday night in Salem, VA for the Division III NCAA football national championship.

The Purple Raiders from Alliance, OH will be playing for an 11th national title in school history, they are playing in the Stagg Bowl for the 16th time in 20 years.

The Tommies are making their first ever trip to the title game.

St. Thomas is 14-0 overall and in the tournament after winning the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and its automatic bid.

The Purple Raiders are 14-0 overall and one of 24 conference champions to claim an automatic bid as Mount Union won its 21st straight and 24th overall Ohio Athletic Conference championship with a 9-0 record.

This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Mount Union lost the last three years in the title game to UW-Whitewater, who did not make the playoffs this year.

The Purple Raiders senior class is the first in 20 years to not have a championship, so that adds a sense of urgency to Friday’s game for the seniors who want to leave Mount Union with a ring.

Friday’s game kicks off at 7:00 and can be seen on ESPNU and ESPN3.
