More Alleged Victims Come Forward in Doctor Abuse Case
AURORA, Ohio – Additional alleged victims have come forward since FOX 8 News and FOX8.com first reported the arrest of a local doctor.
A 24-count indictment was filed last Friday in Portage County against Dr. Mark B. Shaffer, Jr., 79. Shaffer is facing kidnapping and rape charges, plus gross sexual imposition and pandering obscenity involving a minor.
According to authorities, Dr. Shaffer was being investigated by U.S. Postal Inspectors for alleged distribution of child pornography. Shaffer is also accused of having sexual encounters with minors.
“He disclosed that for many years he has been engaged in sexual activity with children,” said Aurora Police Chief Seth Riewaldt. “A conviction of any one of these serious charges is going to put him away for, probably, the rest of his life.”
Dr. Shaffer’s home in Aurora and his medical office at UH Bainbridge Health Center were searched by authorities. A spokesperson for University Hospitals said the hospital won’t comment on a case under criminal investigation.
“Dr. Mark Shaffer, an internal medicine physician, was hired at University Hospitals on October 1, 2008. He was suspended indefinitely on November 29,2012 and he was terminated with cause on December 10, 2012,” said spokesperson Vic Gideon in a statement to FOX 8 News.
Since the indictment was first reported on Tuesday, Chief Riewaldt said the department has heard from additional people who claim to have been abused by Dr. Shaffer. They’re now encouraging anyone else to contact the department at (330) 562-8181.
“He is a physician and has been for many years in this area,” said Chief Riewaldt. “We’re not saying the victims are patients, we’re really just throwing that out – if somebody wants to talk or somebody has concerns – we want to talk to them.”
Shaffer is being held in the Portage County Jail on a bond totaling more than a million dollars.
