ELYRIA, Ohio -- Just in time for Christmas, an Elyria family wins an extreme "Merry Makeover" for the holidays by a celebrity designer.

Out of thousands of people, John and Lonnie Slatcoff and their family are the big winners as Ty Pennington and his decorating crew are giving their house in Elyria a "Merry Makeover" sponsored by Sears.

"For this to happen to us ... just average, everyday people can win something, it's just great, it's just great.  They've been working on the outside, we've never had, we always have kinda Christmas decorations but this is just amazing the stuff they brought.  It's just beautiful," said John Slatcoff.

Plenty of relatives and friends came out to see Ty Pennington and his crew filming the holiday makeover. They also got to see Ty's design team transform the house into an extreme Christmas extravaganza.

"So we brought in the tree and we are gonna deck the halls, literally the entire house, and the outside, so by the end of the day you are gonna be looking at a pretty good Griswald-type of home," said Ty Pennington, a TV home makeover expert.

Once the Christmas tree was totally decorated people were gathering around to take pictures with the star.

"I'm so glad that spirit and that cheer to the family and help decorate, it's something I love doing and being able to share that.  With the holidays, it's really the best part of the holidays in my opinion," said Pennington.

The Slatcoffs' car is also getting a big Sears holiday makeover.

"We are also taking her down to the automotive center to get new tires and alignment, make sure the car is in good running condition for all the holiday trips back and forth to family members' houses so we are really taking care of the family for the holidays.  In fact I'm moving in all month," joked Pennington.

The Slatcoff family also received a $1,000 gift card from Sears.
