Man Accused of Bullying Girl Gets Jail Time
EAST SPARTA, Ohio — An East Sparta man, who was caught on tape allegedly making fun of how a young girl with cerebral palsy walks, was sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Bill Bailey appeared in Canton Municipal Court Tuesday morning and pleaded no contest to reduced charges of menacing and a minor misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge.
The judge sentenced Bailey to the maximum, a month behind bars, and ordered him to report to the Stark County jail in January.
Bailey said very little in court but his attorney, John Guia, released a written statement asking Hope and her family to accept his apology for his “inappropriate behavior.”
The statement also says Bailey did not realize the impact the incident would have in both families.
Assistant Canton Prosecutor Jennifer Fitzsimmons, along with Hope’s parents, Tricia and Mike Knight, say they are pleased with the sentence.
Fitzsimmons says she hopes the case will deter everyone from bullying.
Hope’s parents say their daughter is still afraid of Bailey and they fear possible retaliation.
They are considering seeking a civil protection order against Bailey later this week.
