CANTON, Ohio –The Dover Tornadoes tore through the West Holmes defense in the Division III Region 11 Final. The Knights scored first, but Dover scored most, outscoring West Holmes 48-21.
Quarterback Mason Mamarella led Dover (11-2), which took full advantage of six turnovers from West Holmes (11-2). Mamarella threw for 125 yards, and added another 87 yards on the ground, with six total touchdowns, three rushing and three passing.
The Tornadoes also excelled on special teams with Trey Wallick returning two kickoffs deep into Knights’ territory, and Mamarella did the rest, as Dover raced out to a 21 to 7 lead late in the second quarter. The game turned just before halftime, when West Holmes drove inside the red zone, but an interception in the end zone, ended the scoring threat.
Layne Perone did his best to lead West Holmes back, running for 171 yards and three touchdowns, but the Dover defense kept forcing turnovers, and Mamarella kept turning them into points.
Dover will face Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in the Division III state semifinals next Saturday.
