FNTD Regional Final: SVSM Tames Tigers, Wins Region 9
SOLON, Ohio – The Irish did not need any luck this time. A year after falling to Chagrin Falls in the Division III Regional Final, St. Vincent – St. Mary got a little revenge Saturday night, taming the Tigers 34-7 to advance to next weekend’s State Semifinals.
SVSM got touchdown runs from three different running backs, Paris Campbell, Jr., Vince Lockett, and a pair from Newman Williams as the Irish moved the ball at ease against the usually tough Tigers defense.
Senior quarterback Clayton Uecker came out firing, throwing deep to Jordan Hargrove on the first series, before the duo connected again on a 22-yard pass to start the scoring. SVSM led 13-0 before Chagrin Falls got on the board, on a short pass from senior quarterback Tommy Iammarino to Ben Vandertill, cutting the Irish lead to 13-7.
But that’s when the game turned to the Irish. With just over three minutes left in the second quarter, Uecker led a patient drive deep into Tigers’ territory. With six seconds left, SVSM converted on fourth and goal, with Williams powering in from the one yard line, giving the Irish a 20-7 halftime lead, which they would not relinquish.
SVSM found the end zone once in the third quarter, and once in the fourth to close out the scoring.
With the win, the Irish improve to 11-2 and claim the Region 9 crown. They also advance to the Division III Semifinals, where they will face Dover (11-2) a 48-21 winner over West Holmes (11-2) in the Region 11 Final.
Chagrin Falls finishes the season 11-2, falling one game short of their fourth straight berth in the final four.
