Shattered Family Shares Story at MADD Event Honoring Officers
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Mothers Against Drunk Driving honored more than 100 local police officers for their work on Tuesday night. MADD recognizes officers who are on the front lines of the battle against drugged and drunk drivers.
But the event was about more than saluting police officers. A family that was shattered because of a drunk driver told its story. The Tomasheski’s of Lorain County were out for a drive last summer. A drunk driver crashed into their car, killing a mother and her 11-year-old son. Tom Tomasheski and his daughter survived.
Tom Tomasheski told the officers being recognized, “Gentlemen, ladies, be safe while you are out there and continue to do the hard work that you do.”
His father, also named Tom, remembers a painful night in a hospital.
“Tom took a nosedive and at one point a doctor told us that he would die. I was prepared. We’d already buried two and I bought four plots. Thankfully, I still own two that are unused,” he said.
The drunk driver who struck the Tomasheski’s car was sentenced to 34-years in prison.
