PAINESVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Investigators in Lake County are trying to figure out what sparked a fatal fire at a home in Painesville Township.

Painesville Township firefighters were called to 430 Wetmore Avenue just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. They arrived to find the home “heavily involved” with fire, a news release stated.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, crews quickly learned that 68-year-old homeowner Marion Stewart was trapped inside the home. Stewart’s brother, 61-year-old Melvin, who also lives there, had managed to escape.

Painesville Township Fire Chief Frank Whittaker says the fire was contained to the kitchen and rear of the house. Several fire departments from nearby cities responded to assist.

The blaze was called under control within 15 minutes, but Marion Stewart did not survive.

Melvin Stewart was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

The home was completely destroyed.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
