GREEN, Ohio — A former part-time assistant drama coach at Green Middle School has been labeled a Tier III sex offender and must spend 18 months in prison.

Judge Mary Margaret Rowlands handed the sentence down to Jason Mazan, 28, of Canton, on Wednesday.

On April 7, Mazan was caught behind a Massillon Road business in his parked car with a partially clothed 14-year-old girl.

Mazan pleaded guilty to attempted sexual battery, attempted unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, and falsification.

He was fired from Green Local Schools after his arrest.

“We had no signs that, you know, anything like this would happen,” said Superintendent Michael Nutter in April.  “We were on spring break the week prior and all the credentials had checked out.”

Mazan had no criminal history and he passed a background check, according to school administrators.

Because of his sex offender status, Mazan must register his address with the sheriff’s office for the rest of his life.
