Coast Guard Rescues Men from Boat Fire

CLEVELAND — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two men after their boat caught on fire on Lake Erie Wednesday.

The fire occurred off the shore of in West Harbor shortly after 3 p.m. Authorities say they received a call saying a boat was on fire at 3:27 p.m., and a boat crew from Coast Guard Port Security Unit 309 in Port Clinton responded to the blaze.

Once on shore, the rescued men declined medical attention.

Two other vessels also responded to the fire a short time later, but the blaze had already been put out.

Port Security Unit 309 does not ordinarily operate as a rescue crew. The Unit recently returned to the U.S. after a three-month deployment in the Middle East for Operation Enduring Freedom.
