Retired Detective Fatally Shoots Son
CHICAGO — In what appears a tragic case of mistaken identity, a retired Chicago Police Detective shot and killed his own adult son early Tuesday morning inside his apartment.
The father, James Griffin, was asleep when his son, Michael, 48, was coming inside the apartment in the 5300 block of North Delphia, near O’Hare airport.
“I heard he thought there was an intruder,” said Lou Trifilio, a neighbor of Griffin and fellow retired detective from Area 4. “He was startled out of his sleep,” added Trifilio.
According to family, Michael Griffin was staying with his father temporarily. After his father fell asleep, Michael stepped outside and was coming back inside when his father fired one shot, hitting Michael in the head and killing him.
After finding out the identity of the man he shot, James Griffin complained of chest pain and was brought to the hospital.
No charges are yet filed.
