AKRON, Ohio — Thousands of breast cancer survivors, their families and volunteers walked in Akron’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraiser Sunday.

The annual 5K walk is sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

Money raised from the walk is used to help fund breast cancer research, provide free services to breast cancer patients and survivors, fund access to mammograms, and a host of other awareness initiatives.

One walker dedicated the event to her late mother, who survived the disease. She too is a breast cancer survivor.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is one of more than 270 events of its kind held in the United States this year.

Each year, more than 226,000 are diagnosed with breast cancer.
