FNTD Week #6: Pivotal Conference Clashes
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Week six of the high school football season kicked off tonight with some pivotal conference clashes across Northeast Ohio; starting with a battle of unbeatens in the Premier Athletic Conference: Chardon on the road at Willoughby South.
CHARDON at WILLOUGHBY SOUTH:
Coach Mitch Hewitt’s surprising Hilltoppers are ranked #3 in the latest Division II AP Poll, and have come a long way since 2011, when the defense struggled through a 4-6 season. Last season’s low point came in week six, when South’s All-Ohio running back, Kareem Hunt torched Chardon for 415-yards rushing and a season-high seven touchdown
And Friday night, it was more of the same, as Hunt led Willoughby South to a 35-14 victory. He’s the early frontrunner for Ohio’s prestigious Mr. Football award.
Willoughby South has now beaten Chardon five straight years, and has not lost to the Hilltoppers at Harry. E. Winters Stadium since 2006. Willoughby South now moves to the top of the PAC Standings, but still has to play the conference’s other unbeaten team, Painesville Riverside.
MENTOR at BRUNSWICK:
A pair of perennial playoff contenders in Division I, Brunswick and Mentor, met Friday night in a key Northeast Ohio Conference game at Brunswick’s newly refurbished Judy Kirsch Field.
And tonight, it was the Mitch Trubisky show. He had six touchdowns, five through the air, and became Mentor’s all-time leading passer. The Cardinals ran away from Brunswick 49-21.
Trubisky, a University of North Carolina recruit has led the Cardinals to wins over three Division I opponents, and the 6th spot in the latest FOX 8 TOP-8 poll. Mentor’s only loss came to defending State Champion, St. Ignatius in week three.
Mentor now has a leg up in the very competitive NEO Valley Division, which also includes playoff hopefuls Solon and Twinsburg.
CARDINAL at KIRTLAND:
Kirtland is not only the reigning State Champion in Division V, but the Hornets have also won 20 straight games. In fact, Coach Tiger LaVerde’s team has not lost a regular season game since September 2009, running off a streak of 30 consecutive wins, and back-to-back Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division Titles.
And, you can make that 31 after tonight’s game. Kirtland trounces Cardinal by a final score of 54-0.
