CLEVELAND — Several homes in a Cleveland neighborhood were evacuated after a suspicious package was found inside a mailbox, Fox 8 News reports.

Cleveland Fire Department spokesperson Larry Gray said firefighters had responded to the area near Independence and Sykora roads, at around 1:30 p.m., after a postal carrier discovered the smoking package inside a mailbox while on his route.

The Cleveland Bomb Squad along with U.S. Postal Service inspectors are investigating at the scene.

It was determined an unknown substance, contained inside four bottles, was the source of the smoke.

Crews are not evacuating additional homes, Gray said.

Motorists should avoid the aforementioned area as a large portion of Independence Road has been blocked off.

Further details about the incident were not immediately released.
