St. Edward Soars Past Akron Buchtel

The St. Edward Eagles played a nearly flawless football game Saturday night, dominating Akron Buchtel in every facet of the game, in a 48-0 win at Lakewood Stadium.

Senior quarterback Ryan Fallon threw for one touchdown and added another score on the ground. Star tailback Dwayne Aaron picked up where he left off in week one, rushing for his third touchdown of the season on the game’s opening possession. St. Eds jumped out to a 31-0 halftime lead, and Fallon made it 38-0 with his third touchdown pass of the season, on the Eagles’ first possession of the third quarter.

St. Edward Coach Rick Finotti then gave Fallon a rest, to get some snaps for sophomore QB Kyle Shurmur, son of Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur, who promptly led an efficient drive, which ended with Shurmur’s first touchdown pass on the varsity level.¬†

The Eagles offense moved the ball almost at will against the helpless Griffins defense, but it was the St. Edward defense that controlled the game from the opening kick. Soloman Warfield returned to action, after missing the season opening victory over Glenville, with an injury and the senior safety did not miss a beat. The Iowa recruit led the charge as the Eagles stuffed Buchtel’s running attack all night. Warfield also got plenty of help from linebackers Lavonte Robinson and¬†Kenny Butler, as Eds rarely allowed Buchtel to cross midfield.

St. Edward (2-0) returns to the Madhouse on Madison Avenue next Saturday, September 8 for a 2:00 pm kickoff against Woodson High School from Washington, D.C. The Eagles dominated Woodson in three meetings from 2006-2008.

Road weary Akron Buchtel (0-2) continues its brutal start to the season next Friday, Sept. 7 at Solon. The 7:00 pm kickoff will mark the Griffins third straight road game against a 2011 Division I Playoff Team, following loses to St. Edward and Massillon Washington.
