(CNN) — New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Jeffrey Johnson, 53, had been fired from his job a year before he killed a former colleague and shot nine other people in front of the Empire State Building on Friday morning.

Johnson, who had worked as a designer at Hazan Import Corp., wielded a .45 caliber hand gun during the attack, Kelly said. Two women and seven men were wounded, he said.
