‘Real Housewives Star’: My Son Has Autism
Jacqueline Laurita says she is the mother of a son with autism.
The Real Housewives of New Jersey star revealed the news to PEOPLE, although she kept her son’s medical condition hidden from season 4 of the show.
Laurita told the magazine she tried for years to have another baby before her son, Nicholas, 3, was conceived.
The cause for concern started at around 18 months when Nicholas began regressing with his speech and motor skills. He also had trouble answering to his name or noticing when people entered the room.
“We had no idea what was going on,” Laurita told PEOPLE.
After Nicholas was diagnosed, Laurita and her husband, Chris struggled to cope.
“I worry about him being independent when he’s older,” Laurita said. “I spend all my time researching what we can do for him.”
“You never want to think that your child isn’t perfectly healthy. We didn’t want to believe it was true,” Chris told PEOPLE.
The Lauritas are also parents to 10-year-old C.J., and 21-year-old Ashlee (from Jacqueline’s previous marriage).
