SOLON, Ohio — A suspected drunken driver was arrested last week after police say he crashed his car into a tree with his wife and young children inside.

Joseph J. Shaner, 42, of Solon, is facing charges of DUI, endangering children and failure to control.

Solon Police say on August 3, officers were called to Aurora and Liberty roads for a report of a car into a tree that had crashed at a high rate of speed.

According to a police report, officers found Shaner’s wife, 42, and children, both 5, running through a nearby yard. The family members told police they were uninjured.

Moments later, Shaner appeared at the scene. He reportedly told officers “he was having problems with the transmission” on his car, which caused him to crash.

Shaner was booked into the city jail after police gave him a breathalyzer test. He registered a .219 blood alcohol level; the legal limit is .08.
