Hospital Shooting Suspect Charged With Murder
AKRON, Ohio — The Massillon man charged with shooting and killing his wife inside Akron General Medical Center was arraigned Wednesday morning on an aggravated murder charge.
He did not enter a plea.
John Wise, 66, allegedly shot his wife, Barbara, 65, as she laid in the intensive care unit Saturday night. He was arrested at the hospital soon after police arrived.
Officials say Barbara Wise had been critically ill at the time of the shooting, and “mercy killing” was being considered as a possible motive. She initially survived, then died a few days later.
Wise made an initial court appearance Tuesday morning on an attempted murder charge. An Akron Municipal Court Judge set bond at $1 million. The charge was later upgraded to aggravated murder following the homicide ruling from Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Chief Investigator Gary Guenther on Tuesday said that Barbara Wise had died from a gunshot wound to the head.
