AKRON, Ohio -- A Massillon woman who was shot inside the intensive care unit of an Akron hospital Saturday evening has died, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office.
On Sunday afternoon Canton Police described the shooting to Fox 8 News as a 'mercy killing'.
John Wise, 66, went to visit is wife Barbara who was in critical condition at Akron General Medical Center Saturday evening. Akron Police Captain Daniel Zampelli said -- while at her bedside -- Wise took out a handgun and shot his wife.
Captain Zampelli said Barbara Wise was officially pronounced brain dead at 10:20 a.m. Sunday morning.
"The preliminary investigation indicates that in John Wise's mind, the motive was to end his wife's suffering," Captain Zampelli said. But, police are looking at the shooting as a homicide.
Neighbors of the couple, who had been married 45 years, are in disbelief.
"I'm sure he probably thought he did it because he loved her so much and didn't want to see her suffer. But, we have laws. That's just not something you do," one neighbor said.
Neighbor Tina Motz called it very, very sad.
"But, I can kind of understand it. When you've been with someone that long, you wouldn't want them to suffer."
Tami Maddy, who was visiting her husband at the time of the shooting, believes what Wise did was wrong.
"I think that the nurses and the hospital and the doctors are wonderful here, and think they could have taken care of her just fine, to be comfortable," Maddy said.
The shooting was an isolated incident and no one else in the hospital was hurt.
John Wise is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.
