CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Indians prevented the series sweep and stopped Baltimore from making history Monday night, thanks to a 3-1 win over the Orioles.

The Indians pitched with textbook form starting with Justin Masterson who pitched 7.1 innings with 6 strikeouts and gave up 7 hits for his 7th win of the season. Vinnie Pestano finished up the final two-thirds of the eighth inning allowing one base hit and recording a strikeout. Finally, All-Star closer Chris Perez got his 27th save of the year striking out the first two batters in the ninth and getting Wilson Betemit to ground out for the final out.

The Indians had just enough offense for Masterson to get the win. Shin-Soo Choo hit a two-run home run in the third inning, which put Cleveland ahead 2-0. The homer was Choo’s 12th of the season. He finished the game going 2-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. His second run was off a Michael Brantley single in the eighth inning. The Brantley RBI gave the Tribe their 3-1 lead.

Orioles starter Tommy Hunter did not get the same run support his rotation mates got over the weekend. The only run Masterson gave up was from an Omar Quintanilla double that scored Ryan Flaherty in the fifth inning. Hunter pitched 7 innings, gave up 8 hits, 3 earned runs and struck out 4 batters.

The Indians are back at .500 and look to gain ground in the AL Central when they face the division leading Detroit Tigers in a three game series beginning Tuesday night.

The Indians are 4 games behind the Tigers in the standings. Ubaldo Jimenez (8-9) will start for Cleveland and Doug Fister (4-6) will start for Detroit
