CLEVELAND — Nine years ago, Amanda Berry went missing at just 17 years old.

“You can’t walk the streets safe,” said Pamela Johnson, a Cleveland resident who lives down the street from Berry’s old home. “You don’t know who is going to pick you up. You don’t know if your friend is your friend.”

Berry went missing after leaving work at Burger King on her way home to celebrate her  birthday. Her parents were awaiting her arrival just to find out she would never return.

The community is still devastated and his hoping the search will be successful. Crystal Early, a worker at Dimitri’s Family Restaurant, across the street from the Burger King where Berry worked, said she can’t imagine losing a child for nine years.

“I couldn’t imagine it happening to one of my children,” she said. “I feel their suffering and pain. You have to watch your children all of the time.”

Jonathan Ramos has lived in the area his entire life and hopes Amanda’s body is found so the family can find closure.

“A lot of her family members were friends of ours,” Ramos said. “My dad’s, uncle’s … I knew their kids. We all grew up together. It hits home. People who have kids know how important it is to know where your kids are at, at all times. To know where the remains are at would help the family find some peace in their life.”

Johnson lost a son and can relate to the family.

“For the family, it is some closure. I hope it’s her for closure. After nine years, they probably suspected she was dead,” Johnson said. “I know how it is to lose a child, and then to lose a child and not know is tragic.”

Danielle Simko lives down the street from Berry’s old home. She has a young son and can only imagine the pain the Berry family is feeling.

“I would look for her every single day. I would need closure,” Simko said. “I would rather find the body for closure if they did find the body.”

Some neighbors have lived in the neighborhood their whole lives, others have just moved in, but everyone hopes the body is found and the family can move forward.

Fox 8 viewers have been reacting to the developments in this case, and continue to send their thoughts and prayers to Amanda’s family.
