CLEVELAND – We’re months away from the holidays, but St. Augustine’s Parish is already digging out the Christmas tree and ornaments.
“The gift of giving and the gift of God’s love is not only meant for the holiday seasons but throughout the whole year, so we as a parish try to remember this by having this fundraising event,” said parishioner Alice Weaver.
Weaver is prepping for the church’s annual Christmas in July Celebration on Sunday. The rummage sale and gift basket raffle will help fund St. Augustine’s Hunger Center, which helps provide 400 meals to those in need every day.
“People tend to not notice the needs of others during the year,” said fellow organizer Pat Abraham, “Even though it is July and it is 100 degrees it, people still, they like the feeling. It’s the Christmas feeling, it’s the giving feeling and it truly is for a very good cause.”
This is the third year for the church’s summer holiday celebration.
The public is invited to come sift through bargain-priced items, many that are new or newly used.
For an extra burst of Christmas cheer, Weaver said kids can watch holiday movies, decorate cookies, make ornaments and even visit St. Nicholas.
“When you feel that you’re helping someone that truly needs the help, it’s a wonderful feeling,” Abraham said. “Your heart is just too full of love and that’s what it’s all about.”
The church is also seeking donations – gift cards or anything to add to the sale. Contact St. Augustine Parish at (216-781-5530).
The Christmas in July Celebration runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 22. It is located at St. Augustine Parish, 2486 West 14th Street in Cleveland.
