CANTON, Ohio — The Stark County Coroner’s Office has released the name of the hit-and-run victim who was killed shortly after leaving jail Saturday morning, Fox 8 News reports.

Investigator Rick Walters said Heather Smith, 29, of Canton, is believed to have been struck by a car between 1:15-1:45 a.m. Saturday, in the 3800 block of Route 62. She had been released from the Stark County Jail just after 1 a.m.

Smith’s body was found along a fence line hours later.

Police said the vehicle suspected in the crash was missing the lower-portion of its bumper and sustained other damage.

A person of interest was questioned by police Saturday afternoon, Canton Police Lt. Dan McCartney said. He was not arrested; however, the Canton Police Department believes him to be responsible for the accident and will present the case to the prosecutor’s office on Monday, McCartney said.

The man’s vehicle was being processed by crash investigators. His name was not immediately released as he has not been charged with a crime.
