CANTON, Ohio — A 29-year-old woman was struck and killed early Saturday morning shortly after being released from the Stark County Jail, Fox 8 News reports.

Canton Police Lt. Dan McCartney said officers responded to the 3800 block of Route 62 just after 6 a.m., after a motorist spotted a body laying along a fence line.

There, investigators determined that the woman was the victim of a hit-and-run.

She had been released from the jail just after 1 a.m., and is believed to have been struck between 1:15-1:45 a.m., Stark County Coroner Investigator Rick Walters told Fox 8 News.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.

Canton Police had been searching for the hit-and-run driver earlier on Saturday, but McCartney said a credible tip led officers to a possible suspect.

The man was taken into custody, questioned, then released. He was not arrested; however, the Canton Police Department believes him to be responsible for the accident and will present the case to the prosecutor’s office on Monday, McCartney said.

The man’s vehicle is being processed by crash investigators. His name was not immediately revealed as he has not been charged with a crime.
