AKRON, Ohio — A trip to the ice cream shop turned into a nightmare Wednesday night when a pop-up storm began dumping quarter-size hail on an unsuspecting group of people in Akron.

Chris Haslage says he was at the Handel’s Ice Cream on Eastwood Avenue when the storm rolled in around 9:50 p.m.

“The winds had to have been 70-80 mph, like there was a tornado. The hail was coming towards us in a horizontal fashion,” Haslage said.

A video he shot on his cell phone captured the chaos when the hailstorm hit. At first, people can be heard laughing in disbelief, but then things got serious.

“I was the one screaming for (the ice cream shop employees) to let us in because the kids were getting hurt. Once they gave the OK, I led everyone in,” Haslage said.

Later in the video, many of the sheltered customers show off big, pink welts from being pelted with hail.
