AKRON, Ohio — The driver of a dump truck died Thursday morning after his vehicle crashed into the Cuyahoga River, police said.

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the deceased driver as 41-year-old Christopher Burgess, of Ravenna.

According to Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards, Burgess was driving down Portage Trail hill around 11 a.m., when the dump truck lost its brakes, went through a parking lot then traveled into the Cuyahoga River. Burgess died after the cab of the vehicle became submerged in the water.

Edwards says Burgess stayed in the vehicle as it sped out of control. He honked the horn and waved his arm out of the window, warning people to get out of harm’s way.

A crane service later pulled the truck from the water.
