CHIPPEWA TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A runaway garbage truck damaged several grave markers in Wayne County Friday afternoon.

It happened at the Easton Union Memorial Cemetery on Akron Road in Chippewa Township.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office blog page, the truck had been parked nearby because of a mechanical issue. Sometime later, the unoccupied vehicle rolled down some sandstone steps and traveled through the cemetery.

Residents who have family members buried there are encouraged to check grave markers for damage. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office says affected parties should contact the Chippewa Township Trustees.

Further details about the accident were not immediately released.
