JC Penney Defends Father’s Day Ad With Gay Dads
LAKEWOOD, Ohio — JC Penney has launched a new Father’s Day ad that features a family with two gay dads.
The print ad shows a real-life couple laughing with their two little kids.
“I think it’s great. It pretty much mirrors our life,” laughs John Katsaros, of Lakewood.
Katsaros and his partner Rob are two proud dads, as well.
“We have a little girl — 5 years old — and my partner is her biological daddy,” said Katsaros.
It’s a family unit not often featured in mainstream media until now.
“It looks like our family, and I think it’s wonderful for images to be used in the media that look like family,” said George Graham, of Lakewood.
Graham and his partner have two kids, as well.
“I came out 25 years ago and wondered if I was ever going to have kids, to now, a father of two. I just think society is changing, and I applaud that,” said Graham.
But it hasn’t been easy.
JC Penney’s decision to hire Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson and feature a lesbian couple in a May issue sparked the group, One Million Moms, to boycott the store.
With this latest ad, the group is again, asking people to avoid the store.
“Being 65 years old, I never thought I’d see a time when our particular way of forming a family would be validated,” said Judy Benson, of Lakewood.
“As JC Penney focuses on becoming America’s favorite store, we want to be a store for all Americans. In celebration of Father’s Day, we’re proud that our June book honors men from diverse backgrounds who all share the joy of fatherhood,” said Joey Thomas, Media Relations Manager with JC Penney.
