“O.U.! Ohh, Yeah!” That chant was heard on Friday night as the upstart Bobcats took on the vaunted and No. 1 seeded North Carolina Tar Heels in St. Louis in the Midwest Regional Semifinal.

But the Bobcats nearly pulled off the stunner of the tourney by far, losing in overtime, 73-65 to Roy Williams’ team.

Harrison Barnes scored five of his 12 points in the extra session, and the Tar Heels escaped against John Groce and his courageous Bobcats.

Walter Offutt, who played a whale of a game, scoring 26 points, missed a free throw with 25 ticks left; the only missed freebie of the night for the Bobcats, and that let North Carolina off the hook. A last-second desperation three by D. J. Cooper just missed at the end of regulation. If that ball had gone in, Athens, Ohio, might have needed to call in the authorities.

But as it stands, North Carolina poured it on in overtime and the Bobcats went 0-6 from the field in the extra session. Not a good recipe for an upset.

Ohio U. finishes the year at 29-8. North Carolina plays in the Regional final on Sunday vs. the Kansas-N.C. State semifinal game.
