NEW LYME TOWNSHIP, Ohio --

The Ashtabula Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating an all-terrain vehicle crash that killed a suspected drunk driver.

It happened at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday on Brownville Road in New Lyme Township, about a mile west of State Route 46.

The OSHP said an ATV was headed eastbound on Brownville Road when it drove off the left side of the roadway and down an embankment. The four-wheeler hit several trees as it slid to the bottom, before striking a large tree and bursting into flames. The driver, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected.

Emergency workers pronounced the man dead at the scene. His identity was not immediately released.

Officials believe alcohol was a factor in the crash; however, the accident is still being investigated.
